Livestock Revenue Insurance AgEcon
Hart, Chad E.; Babcock, Bruce A.; Hayes, Dermot J..
This study outlines several possible structures for livestock revenue insurance. The policies take the form of an exotic option—an Asian basket option. The actuarially fair premiums for these policies are equal to the prices of the options they represent. Due to the complexity of pricing Asian basket options, we have combined two techniques for pricing options to reach the actuarially fair premiums. Projected premiums, producer welfare, and program efficiency are evaluated for the insurance products and existing market tools. Using efficiency ratios and certainty equivalent returns, we compare the insurance policies to strategies involving existing futures and options.

LIVING WITH HOGS IN IOWA: THE IMPACT OF LIVESTOCK FACILITIES ON RURAL RESIDENTIAL PROPERTY VALUES AgEcon
Secchi, Silvia; Herriges, Joseph A.; Babcock, Bruce A..
To better understand the magnitude of the effects of livestock feeding operations on residential property values, we constructed a new dataset that merges data on home sales with data on the location and size of livestock feeding operations in five rural counties of Iowa. We estimated a hedonic model to explain variations in residential sales price with standard house attributes, such as number of bedrooms and square feet of living space, as well as the effects of distance and density of livestock feeding operation. We find that livestock operations have an overall statistically significant effect on property values. Predicted negative effects are largest for properties that are downwind and close to livestock operations. In addition, feeding operations...

LONG-TERM PLANNING OF A LIVESTOCK-CROP FARM UNDER GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS AgEcon
Kouka, Pierre-Justin; Duffy, Patricia A.; Taylor, C. Robert.
Optimal crop and livestock mix was determined for a representative Alabama farm using a dynamic programming model. Results indicate that decisions concerning livestock production are highly influenced by the amount of cotton base available on the farm. In most cases, increasing cotton base results in less cattle production. The triple base provisions of the 1990 Farm Bill, however, may give some cotton farmers an incentive to produce more stocker cattle during the winter months. Research results also indicate that the availability of farm programs can alter the optimal enterprise mix on a farm with no beginning base in cotton.

Market Analysis for Dried Distillers Grain in Indiana AgEcon
Dooley, Frank J..
The rapid expansion of the ethanol industry in Indiana has saturated the local market for the principal co-product, distillers grains with solubles (DDGS). In the near term, Indiana’s livestock industry can be expected to consume up to 895,000 tons of DDGS per year. But given production of 2.7 million tons, Indiana’s ethanol producers will rely on railroads and barges to ship excess production to out-of-state destinations. Livestock producers will have a ready access to DDGS across the state.

MARKETING CHANNELS COMPETE FOR U.S. STOCKER CATTLE AgEcon
Schmitz, Troy G.; Moss, Charles B.; Schmitz, Andrew.
This study investigates the underlying reasons for a producer's choice of marketing channels for stocker cattle in the United States. In addition to traditional public auctions, private sales, video auctions, and Internet auctions have been recently used in the marketing of stocker cattle. Findings show that while the number of marketing options may have increased in recent years, only relatively large producers can actually take advantage of these options. The marketing options for smaller producers are still limited due to their relative size. Also, the number of cattle marketed privately and through video and Internet auctions is found to be positively correlated with herd size. In addition, the New Institutional Economics (NIE) provides insights into...

Measuring Welfare Effects of an FMD Outbreak in the United States AgEcon
Paarlberg, Philip L.; Lee, John G.; Seitzinger, Ann Hillberg.
Questions have been raised regarding the economic costs of food-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak in the United States. This analysis examines how welfare changes are measured and argues that they must be decomposed by groups. Producers with animals quarantined and slaughtered because of FMD measure their welfare change using lost sales. Producers not quarantined measure their welfare change using producer surplus. The change in national sales revenue is accurate when the supply elasticity is low. Welfare changes for consumers also must be decomposed because the change in aggregate consumer surplus hides important shifts in welfare among groups of consumers.

Medium Term Outlook for Canadian Agriculture AgEcon
Charlebois, Pierre; Gagne, Stephan.
The purpose of this document is to describe the features of the Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Medium Term Outlook for Canadian Agriculture (previously entitled Medium Term Policy Baseline) covering the period 2007 to 2017. The outlook is an attempt to outline a plausible future of the international and domestic agri-food sectors. It serves as a benchmark for discussion and scenario analysis. The outlook makes specific assumptions and outlines their implications. Since it assumes that policies remain unchanged from existing legislation, the outlook is not a forecast of future events. The medium term assumptions used and published by the OECD/FAO in the Agricultural Outlook 2007-2016 are by in large maintained in the AAFC's international...

Charlebois, Pierre; Gagne, Stephan; Gendron, Carole.
The purpose of this document is to describe the features of the MTO covering the period 2010 to 2020. The MTO is a plausible future for the international and domestic agri-food sectors based on current policies in Canada and other countries as of Fall 2010. It serves as a benchmark for discussion and scenario analysis. The outlook makes specific assumptions and outlines their implications. Since it assumes that policies remain unchanged from existing legislation, the outlook is not a forecast of future events. In particular there are no assumptions made regarding the outcome of the Doha round of trade negotiations. It also assumes no impact from climate change and from policy to mitigate climate change nor significant animal disease outbreaks or unusual...

Methods for the Assessment of Livestock Development Interventions in Smallholder Livestock Systems AgEcon
Rushton, Jonathan.
This Working Paper presents a framework for assessing the impact of livestock diseases on the household economy and at local level. The framework is designed to help decision and policy makers in their selection of pro-poor livestock interventions. It should also help to protect them from making decisions under unwanted pressure from strong, non-objective political voices. The immediate users of the assessment methods presented in the Working Paper are expected to be consultants who have to evaluate interventions on behalf of their clients. These clients may be multi and bi lateral donors and, possibly, NGOs. Other users of the output could be governments receiving aid and communities receiving support. The author has drawn upon past experience to...

MILK PRODUCTION AS AN INDICATOR OF DROUGHT VULNERABILITY OF CITIES LOCATED IN THE BRAZILIAN SEMIARID REGION REA
Andrade,Tafnes da S.; Cunha,John E. de B. L.; Galvão,Carlos de O.; Rufino,Iana A. A..
ABSTRACT Several spectral indices have been used to estimate droughts, however, these indicators only give evidence of a dry spell leaving out its impacts on significant economic activities performed in a given region. In this context, livestock breeding in one of the most important activities to analyze in the Brazilian semiarid region. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the drought indices, obtained through remote sensory devices, and annual milk production (2004 – 2014), identifying the most affected cities by the drought and were considered the most vulnerable and in need of special attention during dry periods. In order to analyze the data, the hierarchical grouping technique and correlation analyses between milk production...

Lima,Danilo Montalvão; Abdalla Filho,Adibe Luiz; Lima,Paulo de Mello Tavares; Sakita,Gabriel Zanuto; Silva,Tairon Pannunzio Dias e; McManus,Concepta; Abdalla,Adibe Luiz; Louvandini,Helder.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate three tropical forage species for their in vitro methane (CH4) production and organic matter degradability, in order to determine the relationships between forage grass nutritive quality and CH4 production. Guinea grass (Megathyrsus maximus), palisade grass (Urochloa brizantha), and signal grass (Urochloa decumbens) were evaluated. Palisade grass showed the highest organic matter, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, lignin, and lower-crude protein content. Signal grass had the highest values for hemicellulose and neutral detergent fiber-nitrogen, and the lowest-cellulose content. Guinea grass and signal grass showed a higher-total gas production than palisade grass. Besides, Guinea grass...
